George T. Stagg

GT Stagg is produced at Buffalo Trace distillery which is located in Frankfort, Kentucky.

The distillery was founded in 1787, although a more modern one using steam power was built on the grounds in 1857.

E.H. Taylor Jr. purchased the distillery in 1870 and modernised it further when in 1886 he introduced climate-controlled warehousing and during prohibition the distillery was granted a rare license allowing it to continue for medicinal purposes.

The Sazerac company purchased the distillery in 1992 and immediately renamed it to Buffalo Trace in recognition of the herds of buffalo which once roamed freely in the region.

George T. Stagg General whisky characteristics: Complex, rich, floral, caramel

George T. Stagg, 64.5% ABV, 129 proof (which I believe was 2004, maybe 2005)

Typical cost of this bottle; In USA €€€€€, in Europe €€€€€ to €€€€€

Nose: Raisins and a bouquet of roasted summer flowers.

Palate: Initially rich and creamy followed very quickly by a full-on assault of the palate by cask strength violets.

The effect of water: 4 drops (in about 3-4cl) make for a gentler nose and creamier feel in the mouth, but the flavour was remarkably intensified and the finish much longer.

Plus 4 more drops: Almonds now appear on the nose and it becomes slightly less floral as it loses the violets. But the flaour intensifies further with spicy raisins.

Plus 4 more drops: The spicy raisins are joined by caramel and a return of floral notes.

Overall Impression: Although this one is slightly less floral than my previous GTS, it is still a great which contains more conventional raisin and caramel notes as opposed to Alpine Meadow ones.
But as always, this GTS does not disappoint!
