Max Sauk "Art is Freedom" Max Sauk, a dear friend of mine and Uncle to my girlfriend was born in Hamburg in 1929. After completing his apprenticeship as a carpenter he spent two years studying architecture followed by a further two years of private drawing lessons with A. Schneller's art studio. Between 1950 and 1955 he studied at The Hamburg Academy of Fine Arts and since this time he has worked as a freelance artist. Max Sauk corresponds to the image of an artist evolved by the Italian Renaissance: He is at the same time a painter and sculptor, a graphic artist and wood carver, jeweller and potter, photographer and carpenter. There is indeed no limit to his fantasy and to the materials he uses; granite, marble, wood, bronze and iron. But also polyester, glass, fabric and clay. Inspired by the spirit of the Mediterranean, Max's figures also reflect the 20th Century classism with clear structures and a calm, at times monumental, serenity. His sculptures are often allegories with archaic forms and of a magic-mythical character. Max is a big, silent and serious man from the North, who, one will discover upon getting to know him, has a fine and innate sense of humour. In a very light and playful way he will change quite ordinary objects into pieces of art.

In 1956 Max met and married his wife Gerda and in 1957 he moved to join her in Hannover. Since his wife's retirement in 1985 they have lived in a wonderful old farmhouse in a small village in the Southern Black Forest. The large farmhouse barn was partly converted into a studio and gallery and partly into a small theatre for an audience of up to 30 people, where family and friends gather to attend classical plays abridged and adapted for the tiny stage by Gerda Sauk. The Sauk garden is the centre of these Summer festivities but it is otherwise a tranquil haven and orderly jungle with many sculptures emerging from the bushes and adorning the patio. |
